History
Chartered in 1813, Colby is the 12th-oldest independent liberal arts college in the nation, and in 1871 it became the first previously all-male college in New England to admit women. Before World War II, trustees voted to move the College from its crowded site in downtown Waterville to a campus that overlooks the city and now comprises 713 acres. Since 1937 the College has built 62 buildings on Mayflower Hill. In 2004 the developed portion of the campus was expanded with the opening of the Colby Green, where two new buildings have been completed and another is planned.
