Explore religions of the world with scholars who are experts in particular histories and traditions.
The Department of Religious Studies at Colby offers an interdisciplinary, non-sectarian exploration of religion in human history, culture, and society. Our curriculum includes courses that examine religious texts and traditions across different regions and historical periods, as well as thematic courses that explore religion’s intersections with politics, art, and law. Students engage with a variety of sources, including sacred texts, material culture, and lived practice, using aesthetic, critical, comparative, and cross-cultural methods. By studying religion from different perspectives, students develop deep multicultural understanding and strong skills in research, writing, and analysis. Graduates of our department are prepared to think rigorously and act thoughtfully as informed global citizens and professionals in a wide range of fields, including law, medicine, government, education, and the non-profit sector.
